about

Starting out some time after 43,000 b.c.e, The Vanderbuilts go on a journey, traveling from time to time, place to place, yearning for a simpler way of life, making a plea or pleading for the return of nature. With one eye looking to the nostalgic past, and another looking towards the future, the new record is a crossroads of sorts, for the band as well as society in general.

‘What We Forget’ breaks the mold of the typical album. While there’s a general underlying theme, there aren’t any reoccurring characters. Instead, The Vanderbuilts channel timeless concepts, such as love, loss, and those feelings one cannot deny when alone in nature.

Produced by Grammy Award Winning Producer/Engineer/Mixer Jay Newland, ‘What We Forget’ was recorded at Carriage House Studios in Standford, Connecticut over the course of 3 days in August of 2012 with Finnegan Shanahan supplying original string arrangements and recorded violin for the album. The next seven months were taken by Newland to meticulously mix the record in order to properly portray The Vanderbuilts as they sound when they play live in a room together.

The Vanderbuilts goal for ‘What We Forget’ was to be able to perform all of the songs off of the album live, without the need of any previously recorded tracks to accompany them. They have achieved this goal and so much more. ‘What We Forget’ is organic and purposeful as live performance. By staying true to their music and true to themselves, The Vanderbuilts keep their edge as they make their way along the road less traveled.
